JOHN 5:19-30

IDENTITY AND ACTIONS OF THE SON
I. Introduction:
Note:? We are going to talk about good news tonight.? We are going to talk about the glory and power of Christ which is good news.?
Q? If someone asked you, “What can Christ do for me?”? how would you answer?
Q? What is Christ capable of doing for people?
An = Let them list things, then if they do not speak of the after life…
Q? What can Christ do for us after we die?
An = This is what we are going to focus on tonight.? What can Christ do and why He can do it.?? Turn with me to John 5:19.
II.? Who is Christ:? Power to Give Life and Control All Eternal Judgment.? 5:19-29

Q? What does Jesus say about Himself?
An = Jesus only does what He sees the Father doing.? Jesus sees what the Father does and only does those things.? Jesus is the ultimate example of “you become what you see”.? This means that Jesus is in line with, acting in accord with, and modeling all of His behavior on God the Father, the God of the Old Testament.? This is why we study the O.T.
Q? What does it mean for us to understand that we “too” are sent??
An =? We are not to speak of ourselves, our ministry, our spirituality, but speak of Him, of what He wants said.? We are ambassadors, messengers of Him.? Like John, He must increase and we must decrease.? Our hope, our joy, our purpose it to be like our Lord.? WE ARE SENT.
Within that is peace, in that is release from “looking good”, from being a “spiritual giant”, from keeping up the proper “image”, in being sent, is being free.

Q? Why does the Father show the Son things according to verse 20?
An = Because the Father loves the Son.
Q? Why does a Father show a son how to shave, how to be a man, etc. or a mother show her daughter how to behave, how to cook, how to dress etc.
An = A true parent wants their children to be glorious, to be successful, to be all that the parent is.? This is what a true teacher is, a true coach.
Q? Jesus says there is a greater work that will cause them to marvel, according to verse 21 what is it?
An = As the Father raises the dead and gives life, so also the Son is given power to raise the dead and give them life.? Here is an amazing thing:? Jesus can give life to those He pleases!!!?? Jesus has awesome power deriving from the Father!

Q? What else has the Father given into the Son’s hands?
An = All judgment.? It is Jesus who will decide our eternal destiny.
Q? Why has the Father given such responsibility and honor to the Son?
An = So that all may honor the Son and whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father.? Honoring Jesus is not optional!? It is the will of God that we do so!

Q? How do we get eternal life and bypass eternal judgment?
An = By hearing Jesus’ Word and believing in Him who sent Him.? By the way Jesus is speaking to Jews and in their language the word for “hearing” and for “obeying” is the same word in hebrew.? If we obey Jesus’ word and believe in God we can obtain eternal life.
Note:? The call could be tonight!? Jesus calls us to Himself and if we believe and respond in obedience then we will know Him.? It is not me that calls you, but Jesus Christ.

Q? Again how do the dead arise or live?
An = By hearing, by obeying the Word of Jesus.? Of course, this applies to our condition after we die, but what about right now??? What about tonight?
Q? What if you are spiritually dead tonight?? What if you believe your spiritual life is as dead as a doornail, what hope is there to become alive?
An = To obey what Jesus is speaking to you and telling you.? Until you actually believe, actually act on what He has been saying, you stay in your present condition.

Q? How did Jesus get such power and authority?
An = It is given to Him by the Father.? He gives the power to give life and to execute judgment.
Note:? Notice in verse 27 that the Father’s reason for the Son doing the judgment is that the Son is not only the Son of God, but also the Son of man.? Jesus knows us.
Q? Who will come forth when Jesus calls according to 5:28-29?
An = Everyone!? The righteous to a resurrection of life and the evil doers to a resurrection of judgment.? All will respond to the awesome power and majesty of the Son!? As the Father spoke in the Old Testament and life came into being, so from the voice of the Son of Man human beings will be brought forth for one of two kinds of eternal life.
Q? How do you think this will done?? Do you have a mental picture of it?
An = Let them share and then pass out the pictures of the “door” of judgment from the Last Battle.? Pass out pictures and explain.? This is a story that speaks of the end of our world by showing us a parallel world that will be judged just like our own.? In their life-times the creatures and people in that world had a chance to believe and submit their lives to the “Lion”.? When they died they passed by the gate and if they knew the Lion then the moved up into the door, into heaven, but if they did not know the Lion then they passed onto the Lion’s left hand.
Then read the page or so from the book, pp. 144-146.
As the in this story, Christ becomes the defining and dividing aspect of all of our lives.

III.? Summary:
Note:? Christ has made tremendous claims.? Many did not believe it in Jesus’ day and many do not seem to think that Jesus is the most important factor today.? People have grave doubts about the? claims of Jesus Christ.? So….let me read one verse tonight and we will speak just briefly about such claims and next week we will go into even more detail by reading John 5:31-47.

Q? Why is Jesus’ judgement going to be true, what validates Jesus?
An =? He does nothing on His own initiative.? There is no egotism here.? Remember to “hear” in hebrew is the word for “obey”.? Jesus hears the Father, obeys the Father and thus judges.? He does not seek His own will, but the will of Him who sent Him.
